What’s Summer Rock Camp All About?

Summer Rock Camp brings together girls, transgender, and gender non-conforming youth ages 9-15 to learn to play an instrument, attend cool workshops, and form bands in which they write original songs to perform for their friends, family, and community. Our program is volunteer-run.

What Does The Summer Rock Camp Week Look Like?

Camp runs Monday through Friday, with a final showcase where our bands perform their original songs the Saturday following camp.

The week before camp, campers will be assigned to learn either guitar, bass guitar, keyboard, drums, or trumpet for the week. No experience with these or any instruments necessary! Then, every morning of camp, campers will have instrument instruction class taught by experienced musicians.

Each day after instrument instruction, campers will attend two different workshops. Past years workshops included Music Herstory, Anti-Oppression, Gender 101, Experimental Sound, Contact Mic Building, Song Writing, Zine Making, and DIY Promotion (where bands screen printed bang logos on t-shirts, made flyers for the showcase and band buttons and patches).

On Monday afternoon, campers will form bands with which they meet every afternoon of camp to write an original song. Those songs will then be performed at the final showcase.

In between instrument instruction, workshops, and band practice campers will have snacks and lunch (provided by Girls Rock New Orleans), watch local bands perform, play games, make art, sing and dance, and have the most fun ever!!!!!

What’s Teen Mentor Camp All About?

Teens ages 16-19 will spend 4 days learning instruments (guitar, bass guitar, keys, and drums) and engaging in workshops focused on strengthening their advocacy skills. Teens will return to Summer Rock Camp the following week as Teen Mentors, assisting in instrument instruction, leading workshops, and band coaching. Teen Mentors will receive stipends for their participation.

Teen Mentor Camp applications will open in April!
